I painted ‘Elastics’ in January and mid Feb 2026, when the south-west of England was going through its highest rainfall for January and February on record. Spending the majority of time indoors out of the rain brought back childhood memories of not being allowed outside to play, and playing schoolyard games such as elastics (or ‘French Skipping as its known in the UK) inside the house in the kitchen! In this painting I’ve aimed to capture the movement of the game with energetic marking making and a ‘shifting’ palette.
