About
.
I work in both acrylics and oils, building up layers of paint as I work to reveal the complexities of textures and colour. My work typically starts in the natural environment with loosely sketched observations, preserving the emotions and movement around me. I then take those impressions into my studio to fully capture them on larger surfaces such as canvas and cradled board.
I feel a powerful connection to the outside world and to the ‘language’ of landscape. The way the landscape holds and conveys the same emotions as we do in our daily lives is the impetus and story behind much of my work. In this way I portray not just the accessible natural beauty of a wild landscape, but also the emotions and the drama of our life experience.
In my abstract workings, I’m inspired by the shapes and form found in both organic forms and purpose built structures. In this way my abstract work is inspired by a vast spectrum of sources, ranging from the transparency of gemstones, to the shapes and lines of autumnal leaves or the rusty patina on a surface, and to the colours, textures and sounds of the built environment.
